Dilemmas and distractions

Fast forward to 2021, more than five years after writing this blog post. I recently made the harsh decision to put old Internet and web related books for recycling. I am downsizing for the potential move to a smaller place this spring and have to put sentimental feelings aside. The content of the books is too old to be worthy of donating to the public library’s used book stores. Since the bookshops are still closed due to the pandemic, it would be cruel to add to the piles of donations that volunteers need to sort in anticipation for the day when things go back to “normal”. As I sort through the books in the library of le petit apartment, I feel emotionally drained.

books on bookcase and in boxes One section of the personal library, sorted, categorized and tagged for potential purging.

In addition to supporting a family, performing full time work and nestling into a new volunteer role, I have let this project take over a month and will likely let it drag on through the summer. I am letting it prepare me for a quest that is doubly draining and has suffered from my procrastination.

It’s a daunting task to sort and justify keeping or discarding books. Some brought joy, inspiration and comfort. They are like old friends.

Some brought knowledge and helped build skills. Some skills are transferable; some are no longer applicable in today’s job markets.

I think back to 20 years ago, to my foray into dialup connectivity, HTML web design and website usability. While I balanced family, work and survival…

Family reunion word fun in our virtual new world

It was a ironic and humorous choice to select “Discord” as the platform for our first virtual family reunion attempt during the pandemic.

Like thousands of other families, ours wasn’t able to have an in-person reunion this year.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we chose not to risk travel across provincial borders to the usual meeting places in the Georgian Bay area this summer. We managed though to get many siblings, offspring and offshoots to show up for at least one of the five virtual sessions.

Since it was the five-year marker for our family reunion, it was important to me that we have some form of recognition. I delegated three young people to research something suitable for virtual gatherings, for sharing photos and text for the five year status updates (if so wished). We chuckled nervously at the name of the one they chose.

Live your life in happiness, even though those around you live their lives in discord and wish to spread their struggles to you. Be happiness itself.

Discord is…

Winter nesting during the pandemic

I am a homebody and an especially unadventurous one during this pandemic.

With winter here and the holidays almost done, I would hibernate between January 2nd and March 20th if I could.

How about you?

I love my humble home aka le petit apartment. I don’t love having to share a communal laundry room that is constantly unkempt and vandalized by n’er-do-wells. I have written another firm email to our landlord contacts about this months-long frustration.

I am drafting my 2021 goals and updating my five year plan. One item that is becoming more of a priority is to move to a cleaner, secure rental. Ten years since the last move, I will once again use a methodical project management approach. I don’t know how possible travel will be in the next couple of years so I think we can afford the move.

Finding an affordable, secure rental is nearly impossible these days. You’re looking at nearly $2,000 per month for a decent place to accommodate two or three people AND include laundry facilities en suite. I do not want to purchase a condo or house because they come with responsibilities, maintenance and added expenses.

During the extended holiday weekend, I sifted through a few shelves, boxes and file folders in my bedroom. It was a tedious, dusty task done in a relaxed manner, with me retaining the items that held some importance, then shredding, recycling or tossing those that did not.

In the New Year, I will take down the wee Christmas tree, lights and decorations, to place them into their tidy storage bins.

But what about those Christmas cards? Do you keep them for years and years? I will likely bundle them with their envelopes and label with “Christmas 2020” then stuff them into a shoe box with others. Part of me seems to think they will have archival significance in 50 years. I will likely acquiesce to let go of them during the final sweep before the big move.

Just a couple of the bookcases stuffed with books and other things

I don’t have a label maker but I make use of old sticky labels and colourful postits to identify contents of boxes 🙂 I refuse to buy more shelving units to hold excess belongings. According to one of the experts, I should do something about those topless baskets 😀

Thanks for dropping by. What are you up to during the holidays while preparing for a hopeful, healthy 2021?
